The Battle of Polytopia is set on the Square, the bizarre, flat, square-shaped home planet of the Polytopians, drifting in the space of an alternate dimension. The Polytopians are a curious, fight-loving people divided into 16 individual tribes spread across the Square, each with its own distinct characteristics, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses. Players take on the role of ruler for one of these tribes, working to build and expand their civilization in direct competition with the others, with the ultimate goal of becoming the sole ruler of the entire world.

The Battle of Polytopia's core gameplay centers on classic 4X strategy fundamentals — exploration, expansion, exploitation, and extermination — condensed into a fast-paced, turn-based format. Players lead a chosen tribe across an auto-generated map, founding cities, farming and gathering resources, constructing buildings, and researching technologies through a branching tech tree that unlocks new units and strategic options.
