Powerplay doesn’t rely on a heavily scripted story in the traditional RTS sense, with no cast of named commanders exchanging dialog between missions. No, the story is in the situation itself: an industrial nation, built from nothing, fighting to survive in a world where resources are truly finite, and rival forces – known simply as ‘the others’ – are always watching for an opportunity to reclaim what is yours. This struggle for survival is presented in a 6 mission campaign where the stakes of resource scarcity and territorial pressure are introduced gradually, one system at a time, instead of throwing the full complexity at the players straight away. There’s no fantastical premise or elaborate lore here, the tension is all in the mechanical reality of running an economy that can actually collapse, defended by an army only as strong as the supply chain feeding it. That no-nonsense, almost documentary framing — "build, survive, defend, or lose everything" — gives Powerplay's campaign a quiet sense of stakes that many more narratively elaborate RTS games have difficulty earning through dialog alone.
