Flock Around does not follow a traditional narrative; instead, its loose framing casts players as visitors to the Goose Lake Sanctuary tasked with documenting its wildlife. There are no scripted story beats or characters to follow — progress is measured through the in-game guide book, which fills in as players photograph new bird species across the sanctuary's various biomes, giving each session its own open-ended, exploration-driven shape.

Players wander the Goose Lake Sanctuary's multiple biomes, seeking out birds and using an in-game camera to photograph them in different poses to complete their guide book. Items introduced through post-launch updates, like the Selfie Stick and Warp Totems, add new ways to interact with the environment and other players, while public lobbies and text chat support let players team up with strangers or coordinate sessions with up to 10 friends in online co-op. The Emu Island DLC and its 32 new birds, added in the 1.1.8 update, further expand the pool of species to discover, keeping the core photography loop fresh well after initial release.
