Set in 16th-century feudal Japan, Assassin's Creed Shadows follows two protagonists caught up in the long-running conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order. Naoe, a shinobi Assassin from Iga Province, and Yasuke, an African samurai based on historical record, each bring their own perspective and abilities to the unfolding story, with players free to switch between them to experience both stealth-driven and combat-driven approaches to the same central narrative as it moves through castle towns, shrines, and the changing seasons of the Japanese countryside.

Assassin's Creed Shadows blends open-world exploration, stealth, and combat across a large recreation of feudal Japan, letting players freely switch between Naoe and Yasuke to tackle missions using distinct skill sets — stealthy infiltration for Naoe, direct confrontation for Yasuke. A dynamic seasons and weather system adds visual and atmospheric variety to the world beyond the series' established day/night cycle. Between missions, players manage and personalize a customizable shinobi hideout, using it to train, craft gear, and coordinate a network of recruited spies and allies who support intelligence-gathering and broader campaign objectives. The game runs on an upgraded version of Ubisoft's Anvil engine, featuring dynamic lighting and deeper environmental interactivity than earlier series entries.
