Time passes at a natural pace and days transition smoothly between each other as seasons change. The crops you can grow, the fish you can catch and the festivals and events that are active all depend on the season and gives the game a natural rhythm that rewards planning ahead. All of this is combined with relationship building: giving the villagers gifts they like, talking to them often, and attending festivals increases friendship levels that unlock new dialogue, cutscenes, and eventually romance and marriage options.
