DELTARUNE follows Kris, a human teenager predetermined to help save the world alongside Susie, a monster classmate, and Ralsei, a prince from the mysterious Dark World. Set in a parallel universe to Undertale, the story unfolds across a series of chapters exploring themes of fate, choice, and identity, as the trio journeys through increasingly strange and elaborate Dark Worlds tied to the everyday lives of the town's residents, encountering both new characters and familiar faces from Fox's earlier work along the way.

Gameplay combines traditional turn-based RPG mechanics — exploring areas, talking to characters, and choosing to fight or spare enemies — with bullet-dodging battle sequences inspired by Touhou and Chrono Trigger, giving combat a distinct rhythm-and-reflex element on top of standard menu-based commands. The chapter-based structure lets players progress through a linear story at their own pace, picking up exactly where they left off, while optional hidden bosses and, as of Chapter 5's July 2026 patch, adjustable post-defeat difficulty options for certain encounters give players additional ways to shape their own challenge level.

Progress through the linear chapter structure, picking up exactly where you left off in later sessions. Seek out hidden, notoriously difficult bosses if you want an extra challenge beyond the main story. In Chapter 5, use the new post-defeat difficulty options for the Shadow Crystal boss if you want to adjust that encounter's challenge level. Keep the game updated through Steam to receive new chapters as they're released as free updates to the paid package.
