Spectral Gate 2 is a frequency-selective gating plugin for macOS, featuring FFT-based analysis that gates on a per-frequency-bin basis, rather than gating the full signal at once. Unlike a traditional gate that opens or closes depending on overall signal volume, Spectral Gate 2 listens to each individual slice of the frequency spectrum and independently decides what passes through and what gets reduced or silenced – a level of precision that lets it isolate transients, clean up noise or reverb tails, and reshape textures in ways a broadband gate simply can't. The Threshold control is the heart of the plugin – when the energy in a frequency band rises above this threshold, it passes through, when it falls below it's gated. This threshold is not a single, flat value. In the Threshold Curve editor, users can add as many custom points as they want. Individual points can be dragged to reshape the curve exactly, or the whole curve can be moved up and down for quick changes. There is also a fullscreen mode for the ultimate in editing detail. Range and Smoothing further refine the gating behaviour: Range controls how much of the gated (suppressed) frequency content is blended back into the final signal, while Smoothing determines how gradually the gate transitions as frequencies cross the threshold, ranging from sharp, defined gating to glassy, washed-out transitions that avoid audible clicks. Spectral Gate 2 also supports Sidechain (SC) that allows an external audio source to control the gate’s frequency analysis instead of the plugin’s input — great for ducking specific frequencies based on another track, or making rhythmic spectral textures driven by drums or vocals. Step 1: Download Spectral Gate 2 Download or try Spectral Gate 2 for macOS at macospace.com. Step 2: Install & Load the Plugin Install the plugin and load it onto a track, bus or master channel in your DAW. Step 3: Begin with a Preset Choose one of the preset pack included - Bongo, Clean Bass, Drums, Experimental Bass, Man Vocal or Melody - to hear the effect of the plugin before manually tweaking the settings.
