Vanguard 2 is reFX's revival of the classic Vanguard virtual analog synthesizer, a longtime favorite in EDM and trance production, rebuilt with 10 new wavetables, new filters, a new RutaVerb reverb, distortion, tempo-synced LFOs, and a redesigned resizable interface. It remains fully compatible with Vanguard 1 projects, and the Complete edition bundles all 16 previously sold expansions for a total of 2,440 presets and 63 drum samples.

Vanguard 2 is a virtual analog subtractive synthesizer developed by reFX, marking the revival of the original Vanguard — a plugin originally born from a collaboration between reFX and German developer Markus Krause (Tone2) that became a favorite among EDM, trance, and dance producers for its straightforward workflow and ready-to-use sound quality. Rather than simply remastering the original, reFX describes Vanguard 2 as remade, enhanced, and improved from the ground up. The synth retains its familiar foundation — a 3-oscillator design built around classic waves and wavetables, with support for importing user wavetables — while adding 10 brand-new wavetables, two new filter types (high and low pass ladder filters), a new delay mode, a completely new high-quality reverb (RutaVerb, the same algorithm found in Nexus 4), a new distortion effect, and tempo-synced LFOs. The interface has also been overhauled with a less alien-looking black/grey/green design that's vector-based and freely resizable, alongside an advanced sound librarian featuring three-column navigation, color-coded tags, bookmarks, favorites, instant preview, and search-as-you-type filtering.

New Filter Types Two new filter types — high and low pass ladder filters — join the synth's existing filter architecture, adding new tonal shaping options. New Reverb, Delay, and Distortion Effects A completely new high-quality reverb (RutaVerb, shared with Nexus 4), a new delay mode, and a new distortion FX give producers additional built-in processing without needing separate plugins. Tempo-Synced LFOs LFOs can now be synced to host tempo, making rhythmic modulation effects easier to line up with a track's groove. Advanced Sound Librarian A redesigned, three-column preset browser includes color-coded tags, bookmarks, favorites, a dedicated user preset location, instant sound preview, and search-as-you-type filtering by category and tags. Resizable Vector-Based Interface The overhauled interface uses a clearer, less busy black/grey/green design that's vector-based, letting users resize the plugin window to whatever suits their screen and workflow.

How to Use reFX Vanguard 2 2.1.15

Load Vanguard 2 as a VST, VST3, AU, or AAX plugin on an instrument track in your DAW. Browse the advanced sound librarian using its three-column layout, filtering by category, tags, or your own bookmarks and favorites. Select a starting preset, using instant preview and search-as-you-type to quickly audition sounds. Shape your patch using the 3-oscillator engine, choosing from classic waves or the newly added wavetables. Apply the new high and low pass ladder filters, or other filter types, to further shape your tone. Add movement using the tempo-synced LFOs, and shape the final sound using the new reverb, delay, or distortion effects. If bringing over an existing Vanguard 1 project, open it directly in Vanguard 2 — your original sounds should load automatically. Resize the plugin's vector-based interface to whatever suits your screen size and workflow preference.
