Orra Audio is a plugin developer that has quickly built a solid reputation with tools like Orra EQ and the free Orra Tone Zone and this is their latest release. Orra Press is founded on a simple, but powerful, idea: compression is not usually a single decision. In real mixing situations, engineers often want a few different compressor behaviours, like a fast transient-catching stage, a smoother tone-shaping stage, maybe some spectral cleanup, and a limiter at the end. Traditionally, this means opening multiple plugin windows, managing CPU load across all of them and losing track of settings as you switch between instances. Orra Press has built a single plugin window with six configurable slots, that has it all. Each slot can host any one of six compression engines, and you're free to load the same engine into multiple slots, rearrange the order with simple controls, and build a chain that matches the material rather than forcing the material to fit a fixed workflow. The plugin is commercial and costs $49. It is available on Lemon Squeezy and uses license-key activation. It runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs (Universal 2 build) and on 64-bit Windows 10 and later, and is compatible with virtually every modern DAW that supports VST3, AU or AAX. What makes Orra Press stand out in a crowded compressor market isn't a single flashy feature it's the workflow. Six Separate Compression Engines Orra Press has 6 different compression types based on popular compression styles: Classic VCA - snappy, punchy, precise. Ideal for all-purpose level control and adding energy to a mix bus. Optical – Smooth, program-dependent gain reduction that reacts more musically to dynamics, perfect for vocals and bass. FET – Aggressive and transient-forward, good for drums and anything that needs an energetic, "grabbed" character. Multiband – 4-band linear phase design with draggable crossover points, for compression at specific frequencies without phase artefacts. Spectral - FFT based compression with resonance targeting, for surgical control over some problematic frequencies. Limiter – True-peak master-class limiter with LUFS metering built into the signal chain. 6 Reorderable Slots Orra Press does not have just one signal path, it has six slots, and each one of them can hold any of the six engines. You may: Copy the same engine into a number of slots (eg three Classic VCA stages that each provide 2 dB of gentle reduction) Simple arrow controls to change engine order Feel free to play around without loosing your dialled in settings Rearrange The killer feature of the plugin is that it makes building a compression chain a one-window task and not a multi-plugin exercise. Stand Alone Per-Slot Sidechain Each of the 6 slots can be sidechained individually. This means that different engines in the same chain can duck against completely different trigger sources – e.g., your Multiband stage ducking against a kick drum while your Optical stage responds to the full mix bus. Companion Plugin: Orra Link Orra Press comes bundled with Orra Link, a light-weight sender-only plugin. Drop it on any track and that track becomes a sidechain source within Orra Press, denoted by its actual track name and colour. This makes cross-track, cross-bus sidechaining easy even in DAWs that are not so great at it. Limiter Module Mastering Grade The Limiter engine isn't a basic brickwall — it includes true-peak inter-sample peak (ISP) detection and real-time LUFS metering, meaning Orra Press can realistically handle the final loudness stage of a mix or a rough master without needing a separate limiter plugin. Multiband Linear Phase Filtering The Multiband engine employs a 4-band FIR (linear-phase) design which avoids the phase smearing that can occur with traditional IIR-based multiband compressors — useful when compression needs to remain transparent across the frequency spectrum. How to Use Orra Press (Step by Step Guide) Step 1: Install & Activate When you buy Orra Press you will receive your license key and download link via Lemon Squeezy. Download the installer for your operating system (macOS or Windows) run it and provide your license key if requested. You can run your licence on 3 computers. Step 2: Insert Orra Press on a Track or Bus Orra Press is inserted like any other insert effect, on a single track, a group bus or your master bus, depending on what you are compressing. Step 3: Select Your First Engine Open the plugin and select an engine for your first slot according to the job you need done: Use either the FET or Classic VCA to punch up transients on drums or other rhythmic material. Go Optical for smoother, more musical control on vocals or bass Use Multiband or Spectral if you are targeting specific frequency ranges or resonances Save the Limiter for your final slot if you're managing overall loudness and peak levels Step 4: Build Your Chain Add additional engines into the remaining slots as needed. Typical workflow is: FET – capture and shape transients Optical – flatten out the overall dynamic range Multiband – clean up problem frequencies Limiter - to control the peak and loudness of the final sound. You don't have to follow this order though – use the arrow controls to change the order of slots at any time, and hear how the chain reacts differently depending on sequence. Step 5: Side-Chaining (optional) To get one slot to respond to another track (e.g. ducking a bass compressor against a kick drum), place the Orra Link plugin on the track that will trigger the response. Then it appears as a named, colour-coded option in the sidechain source menu of that slot in Orra Press. Step 6: Fine-tune Each Engine Adjust the individual controls of each engine (threshold, ratio, attack, release, engine-specific parameters) one slot at a time. Each slot is visually separated, so it is easy to isolate and fine-tune one stage without losing sight of the others. Step 7: Final touches with Limiter If loudness and true-peak safety are important for your final output, load the Limiter engine into your last slot. The built-in LUFS metering allows you to hit your target loudness (e.g. for streaming platforms, mastering delivery, etc.) while the true-peak detection keeps inter sample peaks in check.
