OpenIn sits between you and macOS and asks, or decides by your rules, which browser, browser profile or app should open each link or file you click. It’s for people who juggle several browsers, work and personal profiles, or more than one app for the same file type.

OpenIn - Advanced Link Handler 4.5.1 Overview

OpenIn is a link and file router made by Loshadki, LLC, the studio of developer Denis Gladkikh. You set it as your Mac’s “default browser”. From then on, every link you click goes through OpenIn first. You can have it show a small picker every time, or set rules that send links automatically. For example, work domains can open in Chrome’s Work profile, Zoom invites can go straight to the Zoom app, and mailto: links can open in Gmail. It does the same for files. Instead of a Markdown file launching a heavy code editor, you choose which app opens it. Version 4.4 added routing for many more link types, on-device phishing checks, and support for more browser profiles. Later updates fixed Safari Profile routing and added magnet links.

How to Use OpenIn - Advanced Link Handler 4.5.1

Launch it and follow the welcome tutorial, which finds your installed browsers. Go to System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default web browser and choose OpenIn. App Store users: download the free OpenIn Helper from the developer’s site when prompted. It’s needed for features such as Safari Profiles. Optional: enable the Safari extension, or install the Chrome and Firefox extensions, to send links from inside the browser.
