WhatCable is a menu bar app that tells you, in plain English, what each USB-C cable plugged into your Mac can actually do: its data speed, charging power and whether it’s certified. The Pro upgrade adds diagnostics for finding the weak link when charging or transfers are slow. It’s for anyone with a drawer full of USB-C cables that all look the same.

WhatCable is made by Darryl Morley and is open source under the MIT license. It reads the details macOS already collects about connected cables, chargers and devices, but doesn’t show you, and explains them simply. The free app covers the basics, like cable speed, power rating, e-marker details and USB-IF certification. WhatCable Pro is a paid upgrade inside the same app. It adds live power metering, cable history, connection negotiation details and port health tools. It only runs on Apple Silicon Macs.

Plain-English cable details (free): It shows each cable’s data speed, current rating, maker and USB Power Delivery profiles, with the active charging profile highlighted. “What’s limiting this?” verdict (free): It tells you whether the Mac port, the cable or the device is holding back speed or charging, so you know if a new cable would actually help. Version 1.4.0 fixed cases where the cable was blamed for a slow device further down the chain. USB-IF certification check (free): It reads the certificate from the cable itself, with no internet lookup needed. Connected devices tree (free): It shows what’s plugged into what, including devices behind docks and displays. Version 1.4.0 places them by the chain’s real layout. Live power metering (Pro): It shows the watts, amps and volts actually flowing into your Mac, with power graphs for each port. How to Use WhatCable Pro 1.4.0 by EDISO

Unzip it and drag WhatCable into your Applications folder. Open it. If macOS says the app was downloaded from the internet, click Open. The WhatCable icon appears in your menu bar. Plug a cable or device into your Mac to see its details. For Pro, buy a license and enter your key in the app’s Pro page.
