BetterZip 6.0.2 Overview

BetterZip is a native macOS archive manager that has been developed independently since 2006. It is centered on a browsing experience for compressed files that is similar to that of the Finder. BetterZip allows you to view, explore, and search archive contents directly by dragging out only the files you truly need, as opposed to extracting a full archive to see what's within. A complete visual redesign, a modern split-view layout, a rearranged Settings window, a hint of Apple's Liquid Glass design language, and a new app icon inspired by kokedama the Japanese practice of growing a plant on a wrapped moss ball were all included in version 6.0.2, a refinement release within the recently released BetterZip 6 line. Alongside the revamp, BetterZip 6 emphasizes automation: a new command-line helper tool (installable from the BetterZip menu) allows scripts and Terminal-based processes, and native Shortcuts actions and App Intents allow it to integrate straight into macOS's Shortcuts app. BetterZip is a Universal Binary that works with both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and requires macOS 13.5 or later.

Key Features

Browsing Archives like a Finder Open an archive and browse its contents in icon view or columns view, just like navigating folders in Finder—no need to extract everything first just to see what's inside. Change Archives On-Site Add, delete, rename and edit files inside an archive directly, without extracting and rebuilding the entire archive. Edit a file within an archive using an external app and BetterZip will automatically save the changes back once you are finished. Support for Wide Format Create archives in ZIP, DMG, TAR, TGZ, TBZ, TXZ, TZ, Zstandard, Brotli, 7-Zip, XAR, and ISO, and open and extract more than 30 different archive formats, including RAR through an external command-line utility. Collection mode Copy files and folders from Finder or other apps to the clipboard, then paste them straight into BetterZip's Collect Mode to build an archive without manually dragging each item. Copy/Paste Support (standard) If you want to add files to the current archive folder, just copy files in Finder and paste them in BetterZip. This is the normal macOS copy-paste behavior. Cross Platform Compatibility Fix up Strip Mac-specific junk files Thumbs.db, .DS_Store, .git folders, build artifacts from archives on creation, or selectively skip them on extraction, so archives look clean when shared with Windows or Linux users. Split File Join & Email Attachments Support Join split archive files (.001, .002, and similar), and decode winmail.dat attachments commonly sent from corporate email systems. Support for ePub ePub files are just ZIP files with a particular structure inside , and can be opened and edited directly . Preset-Based Automation Create or extract a preset of the once-spanning format, destination, passwords and filters and apply it instantly from the menu, toolbar, Finder, a Shortcut, a Workflow or the command line. Quick Look-Integration With the BetterZip Quick Look extension you can preview the contents of archives directly in the Finder's preview pane, in column view or using the spacebar, without ever launching BetterZip. Complete Scripting & Automation Support BetterZip is fully scriptable with AppleScript and automatable with Shortcuts actions, a CLI tool to be used in Terminal pipelines and CI and Automator actions for compress, extract and test operations. It also integrates with tools like Hazel, Alfred, LaunchBar, and DropZone.

How to Use BetterZip 6.0.2

Step 1: Download BetterZip Mac App Download BetterZip from macospace.com Step 2: Download & Run Drag BetterZip to your Applications folder and open it. On first launch, you may be prompted to grant it as your default archive handler. Step 3: Open an Archive Double click any supported archive file, or drag it into BetterZip and browse through the contents in a Finder-like window without having to extract everything first. Step 4: Pull out the Essentials Search or select single files within the archive and drag them out directly without unpacking the entire archive to a temp folder. Step 5: Change an Archive in-place Add, delete, rename, or edit files inside an existing archive. When you edit a file in an external application BetterZip automatically saves your changes back to the archive. Step 6: Create a New Archive Select files or folders in Finder, then use BetterZip's menu, toolbar, or Share extension to compress them into your chosen format — ZIP, 7z, TAR, and more. Step 7: Create Filters Configure filters by name, path, size, or age to exclude clutter like Thumbs.db or .git folders when creating or extracting archives. Step 8: Create a Preset Save your favorite settings for compressing or extracting — format, destination, password, filters — as a preset that you can call from Finder, a keyboard shortcut or the command line. Step 9. Automate with Shortcuts or Terminal Leverage BetterZip’s native Shortcuts actions and App Intents to create automations in the macOS Shortcuts app, or install the command-line helper tool for scripting and CI pipelines.
