Note-C 2.7.2

Note-C is a note-taking and text management application developed by Alexander Sasse of Xelaton Software, an independent Mac developer based in Germany. Built as an alternative to Apple's built-in Notes app, Note-C is designed around a simple but powerful principle: every note is stored as an open, plain text file rather than locked inside a proprietary database, so entries can be opened, synced, or migrated freely using any tool or cloud service the user prefers. What distinguishes Note-C from many note-taking apps is its openness and markup flexibility. Notebooks can be any folder on the Mac, and notes are saved as standard text files, or optionally as Textbundle packages, meaning users can sync through Dropbox, a Synology NAS, or any other method without depending on Note-C's own infrastructure. The app supports a wide range of markup languages — including Markdown, MultiMarkdown, Textile, BBCode, Wikitext, HTML, and the developer's own ApexMarkdown format — alongside a flexible export manager and a built-in text transformation tool called TextButler. Note-C 2.7.2, released August 5, 2026, updates the ApexMarkdown converter to version 1.1.13, adds a Grid Tables option in the Pandoc section, introduces a language option and specific features for Quarto Markdown, and updates the ApexMarkdown settings interface for macOS Tahoe. The app requires macOS 10.13 or later and runs as a universal binary on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, with a 30-day unrestricted demo available directly from the developer.

Launch the app and choose or create a folder on your Mac to use as your first notebook. Import existing text documents into Note-C if you already have notes you'd like to bring in. Create a new note, choosing your preferred markup language — Markdown, MultiMarkdown, Textile, ApexMarkdown, or another supported format. Use color-coding and attachments to organize and enrich individual notes as needed. Save quick "strands" for things you want to remember without formally filing them into a note yet. Switch between notebooks from the main interface to read, edit, or reorganize entries as your projects evolve. Use TextButler to apply custom text transformation recipes to your notes when needed. Export finished notes using the flexible export manager, choosing from formats like PDF, RTF, HTML, Textbundle, or ePub depending on your destination.
