LanScan 8.2.14

LanScan is an IPv4 and IPv6 network scanner for macOS developed by iwaxx Sarl, built to discover every active device on a local network or any public subnet a user configures. Requiring macOS 12.0 or later, LanScan is distributed as a free app with optional in-app purchases that unobfuscate certain results in the free trial version. Version 8.2.14, released August 18, adds fixes for device names containing accents or non-Latin characters (previously displaying as garbled text), handles malformed replies from smart home devices using Matter or Thread more gracefully, fixes crashes related to restoring purchases and starting a live scan, and adds 270 new manufacturers to its MAC address database. What sets LanScan apart from a basic network scanner is the depth of device information it surfaces and how it discovers devices in the first place. On IPv4, it auto-detects configured network interfaces (Airport, Ethernet, virtual interfaces), scans using ARP packets on the local network or Ping/SMB/mDNS packets on public subnets, and resolves hostnames via DNS, mDNS (for Apple devices), and SMB (for Windows devices) — all with no limitation on the number of devices found. On IPv6, it displays both Link-Local (private) and Global (public) addresses. A dedicated NDI (Network Device Identification) module recognizes specific hardware models by manufacturer, regularly updated to catch newly released Apple devices, IoT hardware, and audio/video equipment from brands like Bang & Olufsen, Sennheiser, and Yamaha. Custom hostnames and comments can be added per device, with optional iCloud sync keeping them consistent across a user's Macs, and results can be exported to CSV, semicolon-separated, or pipe-separated files.

Launch the app and select your preferred network interface if you have more than one configured. Set your desired IP range, from a single address up to the entire IPv4 address space, if you don't want to scan the default local range. Start a manual scan, or enable live scan mode for continuous, automatically updating results. Review discovered devices, including IP address, MAC address, hostname, and vendor, in the customizable column view. Assign custom hostnames or comments to specific devices for easier identification in future scans. Enable iCloud sync in the app if you want custom names and comments to stay consistent across your other Macs. Export your results to CSV or another supported format via File → Export Scan Results when needed.
