Hyperspace finds files with identical contents on your Mac and frees the space they take up, without deleting a single file. It’s for anyone with a crowded drive who has piles of duplicate downloads, project copies, photos or media, but doesn’t want to lose any files.

Hyperspace 1.8.2 Overview

Hyperspace is made by John Siracusa, the longtime Mac writer known for his in-depth Mac OS X reviews. It launched in February 2025 and has been updated steadily since. It relies on a built-in feature of APFS, the Mac’s standard file system, called space-saving clones. It’s the same thing the Finder uses when you duplicate a file. Several files can share one copy of the data on disk, while each keeps its own name, dates and location. Hyperspace finds groups of identical files and replaces all but one of them with clones of that file. Afterward, you still have the same files in the same places, but they take up the space of just one. The files stay independent. If you edit one, the others don’t change. Version 1.8.2 adds safety improvements during reclamation and fixes a layout bug on macOS 27.

How to Use Hyperspace 1.8.2

Click Choose Folder… and pick a folder to scan, such as your home folder. Click Scan to see how much space you could reclaim. If it’s worth it, buy access. Then click Review Files and uncheck anything you want to leave alone. Quit your other apps and click Reclaim Space.
