Download Aseprite 1.3.17 Mac Overview

Aseprite is a pixel art and sprite animation editor, first released in 2001 and now actively developed by Igara Studio S.A. It is a source-available, proprietary application written in C++ and Lua and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It offers dedicated tools for image and animation editing, including layers, frames, tilemap support, a command-line interface and Lua scripting for building custom tools and automating workflows. Version 1.3.17, rolled up all features previously tested in the 1.3.17-beta releases and a set of bug fixes, and was followed by point releases 1.3.17.1 and 1.3.17.2 addressing smaller issues, including fixed text-insertion positioning, the ability to install extensions by dragging them into the Preferences dialogue, corrected tile selection behaviour in tilemap layers, and a fix for distorted layers at 20% zoom. You can help test upcoming features as they are developed alongside each stable release before being included in the next stable version, on the Steam beta channel for Igara Studio. Aseprite is available to download as source and can be compiled for free but the free build does not allow saving of sprites. You can purchase the full game on Steam or itch.io

Key Features

Pixel Art Drawing Tools Specialised Aseprite is designed for pixel precision from the ground up, not retrofitting general image editing tools for pixel art, for more clean and controllable pixel placement and editing. History of Frame-by-Frame Animation Directly design sprite animations in an integrated timeline, where each frame can have its own duration, layer visibility state and onion-skinning support for referencing the neighbouring frames while drawing. Tilemaps Support Work directly with tilemap layers (convert a normal layer into a tilemap, customise base index of tileset, select individual tiles in tiles mode accurately). Multiple layers and palletes Art on multiple layers Each animated frame can have its own colour palette, rather than one palette for the entire sprite. Lua Scripting Add Lua scripting to Aseprite for creating custom plugin menu groups and separators to better organise more complex scripted tools in the interface. Command-Line Interface Automate sprite processing and export tasks from the command line, including exporting sprite sheets to JSON format and handling file sequences with tag-based naming patterns. Drag and Drop Install Extensions Install extensions simply by dropping them into the Preferences dialog, streamlining what previously required a more manual installation process. Custom Brush and Tile Effects Custom brush and tile flipping and rotation are assigned keyboard shortcuts (Space+X, Space+Y, Space+D, Space+R) to speed up repetitive transformation tasks in the midst of detailed pixel work. Cross Platform, Actively Maintained Codebase Aseprite is available for Windows, macOS and Linux and the development team continues to ship regular bug-fix and feature releases including regular point releases to address specific reported issues.

Step 4: Draw with Pixel-Precise Tools Use the pixel art tools of Aseprite to draw If you want to work a little more complex you can always work layer by layer. Step 5: Create Animation Frames Add frames to your sprite’s timeline, changing individual frame timings and using onion-skinning to maintain consistency of motion between frames. Step 6: Tilemaps (if needed) You can also convert a layer to tilemap for tile based game assets . This allows you to edit individual tiles with precision and customise the base index of the tileset . Step 7: Expand using Lua Scripts Install or write Lua scripts to add custom tools, automate repetitive tasks or create organised plugin menus in Aseprite interface. Step 8: Install Extensions Install extension files Drag extension files directly into the Preferences dialogue to bypass a separate manual setup process.
