Inkborn 0.5.0 is a roguelike deckbuilder from Acram Digital where players chain card combos based on Glyphs in tactical order, customise a Skill Tree before each run, and explore a non-linear origami world. It’s the studio’s first original game, now in Steam Early Access on Mac.

Inkborn is a non-linear world of ink, metal and paper, folded in an origami-inspired setting that almost literally folds its landscape as something creased and constructed rather than naturally grown. The developers have said that culture, literature and art have been important influences on the game, and this comes through in how the story is delivered. Rather than a fully spelt out narrative revealed upfront, Inkborn slowly uncovers a hidden story woven through the world as players progress through runs. Instead of following a single fixed protagonist’s arc, players journey from one encounter to the next, facing strange creatures native to this folded-paper world, with the implication that each run reveals a bit more of the world’s underlying mystery. As the game is still in Early Access, the full scope of this narrative is still a work in progress — Acram Digital has stated that ongoing content additions, including the Act 2 expansion, will continue to build out both the challenge and the story as development continues, with the studio’s Discord community directly involved in shaping how these elements evolve.

Inkborn’s core loop takes the form of a familiar roguelike deckbuilder - move from encounter to encounter, fight enemies with cards, collect rewards - but its defining mechanic is the way in which those cards interact with each other. Cards are based on a combo system with Glyphs. It’s not just holding the right combo, but playing the right sequence of cards that unlocks powerful chain effects. This makes card order a real tactical layer in a way most hand-management deckbuilders aren't, where usually it only matters what cards you have, not in what order you play them. Players build their own deck from over 60 hand-designed cards, each designed with synergy in mind, encouraging them to experiment with different combo chains across runs. Outside of combat, a Skill Tree allows players to customise their character’s emerging powers before each run, adding a meta-strategic element on top of the moment-to-moment card sequencing. Rewards earned during a run – new cards, card upgrades, potions, and character augments – persist for the rest of that particular run, which culminates in a final showdown with a boss encounter. Act 2 was added in a big Early Access update that added new enemies and unlockable cards that bring a lot of challenge past the original scope of the game. The game is available for Windows, macOS and Steam Deck, with UI and controls tailored to each platform, including D-pad shortcuts for handheld play.

How to Play Download Inkborn 0.5.0 for Mac

Focus on learning the core combo system of Glyphs and don't worry about deck optimisation. Figuring out how card sequencing triggers combo effects is more important early on than having a theoretically "perfect" hand. Make sure you pay attention to the order of the cards in a sequence as well, because the main tactical layer of Inkborn is built around order, not just which cards you have. Don’t just pick up powerful looking cards when building your deck for a run, look for cards that support a specific combo chain – synergy between cards is more important than any individual card’s raw power. Don’t spread points out evenly across unrelated abilities; invest in your Skill Tree with purpose, focusing on the strategy you’re leaning into for that run. Don't be discouraged by early deaths — as a roguelike, each run is meant to teach you something about card synergies and enemy patterns that carries over conceptually, even if your deck resets. Having breezed through the first Act, head into Act 2 for new enemies and more card unlocks, as the difficulty ramp-up assumes a decent understanding of the core Glyph combo system. The Steam Deck will feel a little different controller-wise than using a keyboard and mouse, with the D-pad taking over card shortcuts, which takes a bit of getting used to. For beginners: Feel free to try out new card combinations in early runs as Inkborn's replayability is designed specifically to discover new combo interactions across multiple runs.
