Existential Treads is set in a post-post-apocalyptic world — a setting that has already moved past its initial collapse and into a stranger, more settled aftermath. Players take on the role of rebuilding civilization from old-world ruins, salvaging materials, rescuing survivors, and establishing new settlements, all while automated enemy forces continue to threaten whatever progress has been made. The tone leans into dry, existential humor fitting the title, with settler dialogue — expanded further in the Mini Missions update — adding personality and flavor to the otherwise systems-driven survival loop.

Players alternate between demolishing ruins to gather resources and using those materials to construct and strategically place buildings within their growing settlement, all while rescuing survivors to bolster their population. Automated enemy waves test the strength and placement of what's been built, turning city-building decisions directly into survival outcomes. Procedural level generation and randomized building sequences keep the resource-gathering and construction loop fresh across runs, while the Mini Missions update adds 9 new challenge modes that twist the base gameplay mechanics in different directions, alongside expanded settler dialogue across Mini Missions, Daily Island, and Skirmishes modes.
