Verso Writer is a native macOS word processor designed to open and properly edit legacy.doc and.docx files that users actually receive. Instead of converting everything into a proprietary alternative, Verso Writer saves changes back to the original file format. As a truly local writing tool with no sign-in, no subscription, and, according to the developer, no data collection at all, it is positioned as being heavier than TextEdit but significantly lighter than Microsoft 365. The program supports.odt,.txt,.html, and.dotx templates; files remain on disc in.docx, Markdown, RTF, or plain text; PDF is an export format. Features that Verso does not implement in a document are left in the file rather than removed, which is a defining design decision. This means that a round trip to Word is intended to keep styles, tables, footnotes, headers, comments, and numbering intact rather than silently discarding anything unsupported. Track Changes is incredibly helpful when a document is part of a review workflow as opposed to solo writing. It highlights insertions, displays deletions, and lists every edit in a sidebar Changes panel where users can accept or reject individually or in bulk. Additionally, comments round-trip through.docx. Esc restores the full view after Focus Mode (⇧F) reshapes the window around the current page and dims everything but the sentence being worked on.
